Applied Kinesiology (AK)
is a clinically based system of assessment that evaluates structural, biochemical, and emotional aspects of health through manual muscle testing, integrated with standard diagnostic and clinical methods.
A dynamic clinical approach that enables comprehensive evaluation and effective treatment of functional imbalance.

Applied Kinesiology is primarily concerned with the relationship between muscular function and the nervous system, and how this interaction influences all other physiological systems. Understanding the interrelationship between structural, biochemical, and emotional factors, known as the triad of health, allows for a genuinely integrative approach to clinical assessment and care.
By identifying the primary drivers of dysfunction, appropriate therapeutic interventions can be selected and applied with precision. This supports highly individualised, evidence-informed treatment strategies aimed at resolving the underlying causes of presenting health concerns. Patients frequently report clear, observable improvements in function and wellbeing, and often recommend Applied Kinesiology to others based on their clinical experience.
Many osteopaths or chiropractors learn few, if any accurate muscle testing procedures during their undergraduate degree. This is likely because there are many confounding factors that can affect the outcome of a muscle test, and the examiner needs to be able to control for these. This is where Applied Kinesiology excels, and through manual muscle testing the examiner can find underlying hidden imbalances in the body, through neurological feedback and the body’s motor responses to challenges.
Muscle testing is one of the best ways to achieve accurate communication with the body. It is invaluable not only for diagnosis and the choice of appropriate treatment, but also for checking the immediate clinical outcome. It also dramatically expands your ability to treat a wider spectrum of health conditions. Many osteopaths and chiropractors receive limited formal training in accurate manual muscle testing during their undergraduate education. This is largely due to the number of variables that can influence test results, which require careful recognition and control. Applied Kinesiology places particular emphasis on developing these skills, enabling practitioners to identify underlying functional imbalances through neurological feedback and the body’s motor responses to specific challenges.
Manual muscle testing provides a reliable method of communicating with the body’s adaptive responses. It supports accurate clinical assessment, informed treatment selection, and ongoing evaluation of therapeutic outcomes. When applied correctly, it also expands the practitioner’s ability to work effectively with a broader range of functional and health-related conditions.
Treatments may involve:
- Targeted joint manipulation and mobilisation to restore normal biomechanics and joint function
- Myofascial and soft tissue techniques to reduce tension, improve circulation, and support neuromuscular balance
- Cranial assessment and correction to address dural tension and craniosacral motion patterns
- Acupuncture meridian and point therapy to support energetic balance and organ–muscle relationships
- Functional testing of nutritional, herbal, and homeopathic remedies to guide individualised supplementation
- Clinical nutrition and dietary support to optimise metabolic, endocrine, immune, and inflammatory pathways
- Supportive counselling, stress regulation, and lifestyle guidance to address emotional and behavioural influences on health
- Assessment of environmental and chemical stressors that may contribute to chronic or recurrent dysfunction
- Application of neurological and reflex-based techniques to support central and peripheral nervous system regulation
- Clinical prioritisation and integrative treatment planning to address primary drivers of dysfunction
This approach allows treatment to be tailored to the individual, rather than applying a standardised protocol.
About the Course
The Applied Kinesiology Foundation Course is open to practitioners who have completed a minimum of 3,000 hours of full-time undergraduate education (typically three or more years) in a medically oriented discipline, including osteopathy, chiropractic, physiotherapy, medicine, dentistry, and veterinary medicine. This prerequisite ensures that participants enter the programme with a solid grounding in anatomy, physiology, pathology, and clinical practice, providing a strong foundation for advanced integrative training.
This clinically focused programme is designed to strengthen diagnostic accuracy, clinical reasoning, and confidence in complex case management for both early-career and experienced practitioners. Through a structured, step-by-step learning sequence, each module builds on the previous one, developing an increasingly sophisticated set of practical assessment and treatment skills. Emphasis is placed on safe application, professional judgement, and ethical clinical practice.
Participants gain the tools to determine when, where, and how to intervene, how to prioritise multiple contributing factors, and how to adapt treatment strategies to individual patient presentations. This integrated approach supports more precise clinical decision-making and promotes consistent, measurable improvements in patient outcomes.
